Although the Enterprise is in SME sector, it follows professional practices and corporate governance adopted by reputed and respected Organizations of India. As the Enterprise manufactures products fed to milk animals , managed by mostly small farmers and landless labour class, it has always maintained a low-profile and highly cost-effective operations. Availing the advantages of low cost, quick decisions and flexibility available to SME, it has created its own space in highly competitive and orthodox market. Sustaining in a market dominated by milk co-operatives, exercising over-powering command over farmers, coupled with highly credit-oriented trade practices, was extremely difficult. Yet with assistance of trained strong force of dedicated and determined human capital, employment of appropriate feed technology, emphasis on system-driven processes and ploughed-back profits, the Enterprise has overtaken all competition in Maharashtra to emerge as largest producer of animal feeds in Maharashtra. The Enterprise managed by three promoter Directors , belonging to first generation entrepreneurs has seen revenues and profits scale new heights with every passing year. Exercising close vigilance over costs, targets and changing ecosystem by way of budgeting, monthly planning, monthly profitability, performance appraisals, variance analysis and employee participation has been instrumental in consistent and impressive growth. Since beginning, management has laid emphasis on sharing profits with employees, rewarding talent with rapid promotions, continuous management development programs across the board for all employees, job empowerment and family-like relations with employees.

Chopra Retec Rubber Products Ltd.
Dr. Kiron Chopra
Chairman and Managing Director
We started as a company manufacturing moulded rubber components for the Indian OEM Automotive industry. The numbers were limited, vendors divided and logistics a major constraint for our Lucknow based unit. We had the technical competence but no market or volumes. We decided to explore the export market. We needed volumes and prove our acceptability in global markets. The criteria we laid down for ourselves, was an application that had a high replacement cycle and a market that would test our ability to make good quality. We chose the applications under the car where the parts took the maximum beating and focused on Germany for ascertaining our ability to make quality. The area of application we also started with, was Exhaust System suspension of passenger vehicles in the Aftermarket. Since OEM supplies required a company to go through a long acceptability process and was fraught with liability clauses and copyright issues, logistic involvement, we decided to stay with the aftermarket. This was also recession proof from the viewpoint that even if car sales dropped, the older cars would continue to ply and replacement parts or the aftermarket would thrive nonetheless. We then adapted to the culture of German companies and went a step further by adding value to the product by using innovation and feedback through personal visits on issues relating to product packaging and saving labour operations at the customer end. Competitive pricing, consistent quality, on time delivery, real time communication and relationship building made our model unbeatable. What followed: We forayed into other global markets and targeted Tier 1 and Tier 2 companies and our track record and credentials held us in good stead. Our participation in key and product specific global trade fairs made us visible and known. We added value by enhancing our range of products such as to provide exhaust suspension parts for almost every make and model of car built in the last 5 decades.

Creative Polypack Ltd.
Mr.Binod Kumar Maheshwari
1. For every entrepreneur, the beginning is always difficult, and the road bumpy and it was no different for me. Born in a traditional Marwari family with business interest in Jalpaiguri in North Bengal, I started off, after graduation, by joining the family business as was the norm. But I was restless; feeling cribbed and confined in a limited environment, and wanted to break loose to start afresh as an independent entrepreneur. That is when the journey began. The year was 1970, when I moved base to Calcutta. After discussions with local friends, some solo ground surveys of possible business opportunities available in the ‘70s Calcutta, I settled on flexible packaging as a worthwhile field for exploration. In fact, a friend of mine, who was then making printed corrugated boxes, advised me to try flexible packaging — printed wax-coated paper for which demand was growing from FMCG manufacturers. The beginning was modest, both in terms of initial investment — Rs. 2-3 lakhs (in those days Venture Capital was not easily available, and the Banks were credit-shy to greenhorn entrepreneurs without collaterals. The conditions are vastly improved today!), and infrastructure. In a rented shade of 2000 sq.ft., I set up a modest workshop with one locally procured Gravure printing and wax coating machines, and the business of lamination was on from a proprietary concern to my name. The first big break came when we managed to get a small order for 2 tons, from Hindustan Lever, Calcutta. With Hindustan Lever, Calcutta my business began to grow in volume, and I learned the most essential features of manufacturing and servicing, viz., strict quality control and equally strict delivery schedule. (Large firms were then insisting on JIT supply chains to lower inventory holding costs, and timely supply of outsourced materials.). By 1986, our turnover had grown sufficiently for me to purchase a 14,000 sq.ft land in Calcutta to build my own factory, and install automatic printing, lamination and slitting machines by way of technological upgradation. The proprietary firm, too, morphed into a closely held Limited Company and the upward curve, blissfully, has continued till date. As of today, we have three group companies — ‘Creative Polypack’, hAparna Paper Processing Industry Pvt. Ltd.’ and `Vibgyor Printing and Packaging Pvt. Ltd.’, with units in Kanpur. Pondicherry and Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. The group turnover is in the region of Rs. 550 crore, with Creative Polypack alone accounting for Rs. 370 crore. I learned early, thanks to my connectivity and association with Hindustan Lever, Calcutta that the USP of my products must be centered on Quality and Delivery on time. To ensure quality, state-of-the-art R&D laboratories were set up, trained managers and
